第1章：始まり（1963-1964）Chapter 1: The Beginning (1963–1964)

My martial arts journey began in 1963. But the real beginning was in 1958, when at age nine I enrolled at St. Agnes School in Sparkill, New York. My mother felt it was best for my future to enroll me at St. Agnes School to keep me safe and away from the dangerous streets of New York City. After completing eighth grade, I came to attend St. Vincent's Boys Home in Brooklyn, New York. While residing at St. Vincent's Home, I attended Chelsea Vocational High School in Manhattan in 1963.

During this time, I was introduced to judo by John McGinley, a football and baseball coach at St. Vincent's Home. My physical education teacher, Dr. Saul Cohen, taught martial arts in gym class at Chelsea Vocational High School. I was fascinated by the martial arts and very interested in learning this self-defense system. Dr. Cohen said he was himself a student, training at the Yoshitsune Dojo in Closter, New Jersey. He felt I should visit the dojo and gave me clear directions. My parents were happy to help with transportation.

第2章：義経道場との運命的な出会い（1964）Chapter 2: A Fateful Meeting at Yoshitsune Dojo (1964)

One Monday evening in 1964, I took a bus to the Yoshitsune Dojo. Entering the dojo, I encountered a tall man coming down the stairs. I asked if he was the janitor of the facility; he frowned and said, "Do I look like the janitor?" I confidently replied, "Yes, you do." He led me upstairs, where I met a kind woman who told me the tall man was her husband, Soke Michael DePasquale. She gave me a gi as a gift and guided me to the mat. The next day, Mikey (Michael Jr.) explained I should call him "Soke." Over the following four years, Mikey and I became close friends. In 1968, I earned my first-degree brown belt.

第3章：米国空軍と日本への道（1968-1972）Chapter 3: The U.S. Air Force and the Road to Japan (1968–1972)

1968年の卒業後、私は米国空軍に入隊しました。テキサス州サンアントニオのラックランド空軍基地で基礎訓練を完了しました。休暇中はデパスクワーレ家を訪問し、道場でも稽古しました。1969年、空軍から日本勤務の命令が出ました。三沢空軍基地に配属されることになり、トップシークレットのクリアランスを受けました。マイケル・シニア宗家は八光流柔術の創始者・奥山龍峰への推薦状を書いてくれました。

After graduating in 1968, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. On leave, I visited the DePasquale family and trained at the dojo. In 1969, I received orders to serve in Japan, assigned to Misawa Air Force Base with a top-secret clearance. Soke Michael Sr. wrote a letter of introduction to Soke Okuyama Ryuho, founder of Hakko-ryu Ju-jutsu.

第4章：八光流での修行と師範昇進（1972-1973）Chapter 4: Training in Hakko-ryu and Promotion to Shihan (1972–1973)

1972年11月、日本に到着しました。埼玉県大宮の八光流本部を毎週訪れ、4年間1週末も欠かさず通いました。大宮まで8時間かけて2本の電車に乗る旅でしたが、高熱で病気になった1週末だけ休みました。1973年、日本全国から15人が受験したシハン（師範）テストを受け、見事合格しました。

I arrived in Japan in November 1972. I visited the Hakko-ryu headquarters in Omiya, Saitama every week for four years, missing only one weekend due to high fever. The journey required two trains and eight hours each way. In 1973, fifteen candidates from across Japan sat for the Shihan examination over two intensive weeks. I passed and was awarded the title of Shihan.

第5章：試練と新たな道（1973-1976）Chapter 5: Trial and a New Path (1973–1976)

三沢基地の任務後、韓国赴任の命令を受けましたが、休暇中にカナダの農場で狂犬病の犬に噛まれ、ニューヨークのマウントサイナイ病院で12日間の治療を受けました。治療が奏功しない中、カナダCDCの実験的ワクチンが届き、命が救われました。これにより韓国赴任はキャンセルされ、ロングアイランドのモントーク空軍基地に再配置され、そこで指圧の実施と柔術のデモを始めました。

After my tour at Misawa, I received orders for Korea. During leave, I was bitten by a rabid dog on a farm in Canada and underwent twelve days of treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem. When the treatment was failing, an experimental vaccine from the Canadian CDC arrived and saved my life. My Korea orders were cancelled; I was reassigned to Montauk Air Force Base in the Hamptons, where I began performing shiatsu and ju-jutsu demonstrations.

第6章：師への感謝（2023）Chapter 6: Gratitude to My Teacher (2023)

今は2023年で、私の心には空白があります。マイケル・シニア宗家、二代目宗家マイケル・ジュニア、デパスクワーレ夫人たちで満たされていた場所です。神の助けを借りて、私はデパスクワーレの遺産を記念して義経システムを教え続け、また私自身の泰山流システムも教え続けます。神が私を家に呼ぶまで。

It is now 2023, and there is a void in my heart — the place filled by Soke Michael Sr., 2nd Soke Michael Jr., Mrs. DePasquale, and the DePasquale family. With God's help, I will continue to teach the Yoshitsune system in honor of the DePasquale legacy, as well as my own Taizan-ryu system, until God calls me home.
